Join The Long Walk To Freedom – For White Lions

Will you support The Global White Lion Protection Trust by walking the Long Walk To Freedom?  We have just launched this amazing campaign, thanks to an inspired idea from Kerry Roddy, one of our wonderful UK LionHearted Volunteers, and are now recruiting LionHearted walkers from all around the world to help raise awareness of the plight of White Lions, all Lions in fact and to help raise much needed funding to keep our project on track, protecting the sacred White Lions of Timbavati.

Our aim is to keep on walking, until Lions get the protection they need.  Yet the way we are doing this is simple and easy to take part in.  The following will share how you can get involved – wherever you are and however much you can. So get your walking shoes on and let’s start walking to FREEDOM together!

OK – so STEP 1 – is to make a commitment to walk the long walk to freedom with us.  Simply send me an e-mail at uk@whitelions.org and let me know what you are pledging to do.  Decide how many miles you would like to walk and for how long you would like to do this for.  For example, Kerry has pledged to walk 1000 miles and to do so as quickly as she can.  I have pledged to walk 1000 miles over 1 year.  So in my example I need to walk a total of 2.7 miles per day to achieve this.  I use my iPhone pedometer to tally up the total steps I take every day by simply having my phone in my pocket!  Then I go about my normal day – knowing every step is dedicated to the FREEDOM of the White Lions.  So make your commitment and feel good about it – whatever that looks like – it will help to achieve our goal!  You can find a pedometer application for all smart phones or just purchase a small manual device to keep track of your steps.  On average around 1550 steps is 1 mile.

STEP 2 – Next you need to consider how you can get the word out to all your friends and contacts and to ask for sponsorship – to share with them what you are doing, to invite them to join you and/or to donate to sponsor you as you walk. There are two sets of guide notes below – one for UK residents and one for all other non UK residents – please read the appropriate one for you.

UK Residents: Now if you live in the UK there is a simple website that is designed to make this really easy.  It is called Just Giving.  You need to create an account for yourself.  You will need to add The Global White Lion Protection Trust as your chosen charity to fund raise for by searching for it, where prompted to.  You then need to decide on a fitting title and some wording to support your Long WALK to Freedom. Please don’t name your walk – Walking for Lions – as this might get confused with walking with Lions – the horrific practice that feeds the canned hunting industry…

Decide on a target of funding you would like to aim for – something that feels right for you.  Share clearly with people what you are doing and why you are doing it – from your heart.  Please be clear to share a summary of who and what we are as a non profit organisation and copy the wording below to describe our trust – so that people who haven’t heard of the trust before can get a sense of what we do and why.

“Founded in 2002, by Linda Tucker, the GWLPT is a South African registered non profit organisation and operates in a remote protected area in the epicentre of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere. It heads up a groundbreaking scientific conservation project under the direction of lion ecologist Jason Turner, that reintroduces the critically endangered White Lions back to their natural endemic habitat. Simultaneously, it operates as a rural development programme in support of the area’s indigenous communities, which includes the StarLion Programme for local schools, currently working with around 5000 children, helping empower the next generation by reigniting the children by teaching the 13 Laws of LionHearted Leadership. You can find out more about the trust’s work by visiting http://whitelions.org and http://lindatuckerfoundation.org

Then once you have set this account up you need to visit this link and click on the button to join the team – that way all UK people will be pooled together in one big LionHearted Team – sharing all of our collective fund raising on one page, your own personal page will also track your own progress.

Non UK Residents You won’t be able to use Just Giving as it is purely a UK based platform.  SO you need to be a little bit more creative and give thought to how you can share with your social networks, friends and family, what you are doing.  You could, for example, set up a group on Facebook and invite all your friends and contacts – create an event within that group that describes what you are doing, as I’ll outline below and then DIRECT them to our donate button on our UK website to make their donations for you.  If you ask them to make their donation and then e-mail you to let you know they have and the amount – you can track your progress against your target.  Simple!  The link to send them to is http://whitelions.org/uk and ask them to click on the donate button on the right hand side that you can see on this web page, it is a PayPal button that directs funds to our UK trust.

Guidelines for your information page – be it Facebook or maybe a web page or simply a piece of paper that you share with your friends, you need to decide on a fitting title and some wording to support your Long Walk to Freedom.

STEP 3 Then you can commence your walking, tracking your daily steps and mileage and reporting in regularly to your social networks and friends, sharing your story of how you are getting on and why you are doing this.  If you create interesting story lines you will encourage people to follow you and support you.  If you want to use pictures of the White Lions then also copy images that you will find on our Facebook page – White Lion Protection Trust – they all have our copyright marker to show that these White Lions are under our stewardship and are free roaming in their endemic heartlands – this is REALLY important please as Linda rightfully wants to ensure that only the White Lions we are protecting are shared in connection with our work. Thank you for respecting this.

You can create a document to simply track your steps/miles either manually or on your computer.  Here is a picture of what a few of us have been using to give you an idea.

And that is it!  SO feel free to be flexible with this and do what you can to help – it ALL adds up and makes a huge difference.  Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could create a global team of walkers that are raising awareness and funds all over the world, raising much needed funding to keep our work going AND waking people up to the URGENCY with which Lions, the king of the beasts need our protection and stewardship…. wouldn’t THAT be something to be truly proud of?

Thank you so much for reading this and for getting involved – if you aren’t able to walk then please do consider donating – again it ALL helps!  Sending much love and a huge spring in your step as you WALK the Long Walk to Freedom for the protection of White Lions, all Lions.  Love Julie, UK Office.
